Having travelled to many destinations, what made Sri Lanka stand out to you personally, and was there a moment during your trip that truly surprised you or stayed with you?
For me, as an adventure travel blogger and as someone who’s always chasing more off-the-beaten-path landscapes and nature, mixed with a big interest in history and ancient cultures, Sri Lanka just had a bit of everything.
What really stood out is how much variety there is in such a small place. One day, I was in the middle of the rainforest in Sinharaja, surrounded by nature, and then suddenly, in Colombo, in these chaotic street markets with so much going on everywhere.
I also really liked diving into the history side of it, especially the Portuguese influence on the island. Then, along the trip, you just keep finding waterfalls, learning about the whole gem culture, and the landscapes keep changing all the time. One place that really stayed with me was the Sithulpawwa Rock Temple in Yala National Park; it just felt super raw and untouched out there. Those massive rock formations standing over the canopy of the trees are unbelievable, all surrounded by so many different animals, monkeys, elephants, leopards, malabar pied hornbills, deer, and peacocks.
And the beaches… honestly amazing. I didn’t even see that many, but the ones I passed around Tangalle were already enough to make me want to come back. I definitely want to explore more of the island next time, especially the center-north and east, since I didn’t get to go there.
From your experience on the ground, how would you describe Sri Lanka to travellers who may be hesitant right now, and what would you say to encourage them to visit?
I’d just describe Sri Lanka as a small paradise that still feels pretty real.
From my experience, it felt super safe and easy to travel around. I was mostly in less touristy areas and never had any issues, whether in cities or out in nature. People are really welcoming, the food is amazing, and there’s just a lot of culture everywhere you go.
What I like most is that you get so much variety without having to travel far, jungles, beaches, wildlife, mountains… It’s all there.
If someone’s hesitant, I’d just say go for it. It’s one of those places that surprises you in a good way.
And yeah, it’s also perfectly located. You can combine it with India if you want something more intense, or the Maldives if you just want to slow down and relax after.
